A woman cyclist has died following a collision in the city centre. It’s understood she overbalanced when her cycle wheel became stuck in tram tracks and she fell into the path of an oncoming tour bus.
The 24-year-old was cycling at the West End of Princes Street at around 8.30am yesterday when she came off her bike at the junction with Lothian Road, before being involved in a collision with the Rabbie’s Tours mini-bus. The woman, who has not yet been named, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where she later passed away.
Roads at the busy junction were closed for several hours and diversions put in place while Road Policing Officers carried out investigations at the scene.
Anyone with information is asked to come forward.
Sergeant Fraser Wood from the Road Policing Unit in Edinburgh said: “Sadly, as a result of this collision, the young woman sustained injuries that she could not recover from. Our sympathies are with her family and friends at this time.
“As part of our ongoing investigation we remain keen to speak to members of the public who witnessed this incident, or who have information that can assist us in establishing the full circumstances of what happened.”

Alison Johnstone, Scottish Green MSP for Lothian, used First Minister’s Questions to raise concerns about safe cycling infrastructure following yesterday’s fatal accident in Edinburgh in which a twenty-four year old woman came off her bike on tram tracks and was hit by a minibus.
Cycling campaigners have claimed that the number of accidents on tram tracks in the Capital is higher than in other UK cities.
Alison Johnstone, co-convener of Holyrood’s cross-party group on cycling, said: “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of the young woman who died. While an investigation is underway into the circumstances, it is terrible that it often takes such shocking events to prompt a rethink of how we plan our infrastructure.
“Cycling should be a safe way of getting about our towns and cities for everyday activities. I’m pleased that the First Minister agreed to my request that the Transport Minister meets with campaign groups to discuss what can be done to prevent any further injuries or loss of life.”
Investigations are ongoing following the death of an elderly woman patient after a fire at the Western General’s Royal Victoria building early this morning.
Firefighters from Crewe Toll, Tollcross and McDonald Road fire stations attended a ‘small fire’ in a ground floor ward at 2.30am.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the ward, dealt with the fire and an injured female patient while colleagues assisted hospital staff with the evacuation of 14 other patients from the affected ward to another area within the hospital.
The female patient, who was 75, died at the scene and SFRS Fire Investigation Unit officers are now working with Police Scotland officers to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Investigations are at an early stage following the death of a 75-year-old woman at the Western General Hospital. Officers attended after reports were received of a small fire in a room in one of the wards.”
No one else was injutred in the incident, which was brought under control at 4:45.
Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road collision in Newhaven. The incident happened on Wednesday at around 1.15pm on Lindsay Road.
Harry Slade, an 81-year-old pedestrian, was involved in a collision with a Kia Picanto car and sustained serious injuries. Members of the public, including an off duty doctor, provided emergency first aid until the Scottish Ambulance Service arrived. Mr Slade was then taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he later passed away.
Road Policing Officers responded to the scene and closed the road for around four hours while they conducted their investigation.
Enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing and anyone who can assist police is asked to come forward.
Road Policing Sergeant, Ross Drummond said: “The driver of the Kia stopped immediately and has been helping officers with their enquiry into this incident.
“We are now keen to hear from other motorists or members of the public as we look to establish exactly what happened.
“Officers have managed to speak with a number of those who provided emergency assistance to Mr Slade, but we believe there may be others who witnessed the collision and would urge these individuals to contact police immediately.
“Mr Slade was wearing a distinctive maroon-coloured jacket and a tweed hat. If you remember seeing him around the time of the collision the please get in touch.”

Lothian and Borders Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses following a fatal collision in Dundas Street in the early hours of Saturday morning (December 8).
Forty-three-year-old Edinburgh man Gavin Fulton (pictured) died after being injured in the collision as he walked along the pavement in Dundas Street around 1.20am.
Gavin is described by his friends and family as “one of life’s really good guys”. His father, Bill Fulton, said: “Gavin lived for his family, he was much loved and we will all miss him very much.”
His wife, Jill Fulton, said: “Gavin and I taught our children to be road wise and stay on the pavements where they are safe. Mia, Faye and I along with Gavin’s family are devastated that he was not safe on the pavement. We have lost the most amazing husband, father, son and brother.”
A 50-year-old man has been charged and is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (December 10) in connection with the incident.
Officers are particularly keen to trace a man who was wearing a mustard-coloured jacket or shirt who was seen in the area around the time of the collision.

A pedestrian who was seriously injured in a road collision on Crewe Road South earlier this month has died.
Alan Dowling, (64), of Muirhouse View, passed away this morning at the Western General Hospital, where he was being treated for serious injuries he sustained in the collision with a cement mixer lorry on Thursday 5 April.
There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and a report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
Police are appealing for assistance in tracing relatives of Mr Dowling, and anyone with any information that can help is asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police on (0131) 311 3131.
