Conifox Vandalism: Eight youths charged

UPDATE: 03-03-21: Eight 15-year-olds & a 16-year-old youth have been identified, traced & have been charged with causing damage to Conifox Adventure Park in Kirkliston which happened on Tuesday February 16.

The team at Conifox Adventure Park praise a wonderful community spirit which saw so many offers of help flooding in after recent vandalism 

Conifox Adventure Park director, James Gammell, has issued a statement to express his gratitude, in response to the overwhelming support the park received following the sad events that saw their beloved space vandalised over the last few days. 

James said, “So many friends, visitors and members of the community and local tradesmen have come forward with kind words and offers of help to tidy up our family business, as well as offers to replace and fit damaged equipment at the park. 

“I really appreciate all the messages and the support we have received, and my team and I couldn’t have foreseen the extent of your praise and the love you showed us.

“I also feel that it’s fair to express our gratitude to many of the parents concerned, whom, by lunchtime on Thursday 18th February and merely hours after my original post on our social media platforms, had already taken full responsibility and marched their sons to Conifox to apologise and survey the damage.

“This was an example of great parenting and you should all be commended for setting an example to the young men involved.” 

All of the 13 perpetrators concerned have been identified and the police will now be able to continue with their processes.  

James continues, “We really hope lessons have been learned, and the individuals involved in these extremely distressing acts will now go on to make amends and succeed in life.

“I would be lying if I said the events did not make for incredibly stressful and emotional days – Conifox Adventure Park is our family business, we all love working here and bringing joy to children all over Scotland – but I am also  truthfully grateful that such a strong community spirit had the chance to come to the fore.” 

James and his team have now agreed the youths involved in the incidents will make their way back to Conifox Adventure Park in order to make amends and tidy and clean the marquee, under their parents’ supervision, and they hope their insurance policy will cover their claims. 

Conifox Adventure Park has been closed due to lockdown, but James and the team hope to reopen soon and continue to offer much-needed joy and a wonderful day out to both children and their families.

Conifox Adventure Park gives back this Christmas

Family run for family fun, Conifox Adventure Park has spent the run up to Christmas giving back, in an attempt to show that ‘all is not lost’ when it comes to connecting with your community in 2020.

Donating a number of Christmas trees to different locations and running a competition to team up with a local care home, the park is showing its so much more than just a magical day out.

The home of the most festive firs and spectacular spruces, Conifox Adventure Park wanted to share in the mirthful merriment of Christmas by donating a number of its sought-after trees to some deserving homes.

Firstly, to the local community that has supported it through a difficult year, director James Gammell provided a magnificent tree to Kirkliston, where many families have been regular visitors and the park itself is based.

Secondly, a competition for locals, chosen by locals.

Launched on the first day of the Conifox Adventure Park Christmas Tree Market, Facebook followers were asked to submit an Edinburgh care home that meant something to them, and although it was a close-call until the competition closed on Saturday, Murrayfield House Care Home was voted the winner with the most nominations. They have now received an 8ft tree for the hard-working staff and residents to enjoy (pictured).

Park director, James Gammell, explains why he wants to give the gift of caring this Christmas: “This has been a tough year for everyone, and I know Christmas isn’t going to change that, but even when apart, there is always a little magic felt this time of year.

“ The locations we have donated trees to and the charities we have partnered with are close to our hearts, as they are for the hearts of our local community. We haven’t been able to celebrate with you the way we would all have wanted, but this is just a little way we are showing that, although different, Christmas this year is definitely not cancelled. At the end of the day, it’s about community, friendship and coming together, however we can.”

The donations follow the annual light switch-on of the 60ft tree on Edinburgh Mound, which is also sourced by Conifox Adventure Park. Locals can pick up their own 4-14ft Nordmann Firs, Norway Spruces and Fraser Firs from the park, with them ready to be netted and taken away, or delivered in Edinburgh, South Queensferry, West Lothian and more.

For those elves who already have their tree and have been to the park to donate what they can, but haven’t quite finished the Christmas shopping, gift vouchers are available, and can be used in the main park, the Stables Bistro and the new activity centre upon its opening.

Conifox accepts no imitations as it supplies homegrown Christmas tree for The Mound

Family run, for family fun, Conifox Adventure Park has marked the launch of its yearly Christmas tree market by supplying a Scottish grown Christmas tree for The Mound.

Standing at a majestic 60ft tall, the Edinburgh Mound spruce will be supplied directly from Scotland, promoting the festive feeling of ‘shop local’ this Christmastime, with Conifox Christmas Trees hoping to encourage other Edinburgh residents to source their tree locally, reducing their carbon footprint.

With installation scheduled for 8am on Saturday (7th November), Conifox Adventure Park director, James Gammell, will be there to witness the yearly event.

James said: “From its origins in 1949 when the traditional gifted tree came from Scandinavia, through to 2008 and beyond when it’s been sourced directly from Scotland, the tree on The Mound has always been the starting beacon for Christmas in the capital.

“Seeing the community come together to marvel at the thousands of twinkling lights on a spruce that has united Scotland and Norway for over 70 years, is incredibly heart-warming. Although this year we will all be celebrating Christmas a little differently, we will still feel at home when we look up and see this symbol that is the spirit of Christmas.”

Edinburgh based company Bernard Hunter Cranes and Field and Lawn Christmas lights and city dressing, are both involved in erecting and decorating the Sitka Spruce, which was sourced from a forest in Kintyre.

Although grown in Scotland and supplied by Conifox Christmas Trees, the tree continues to be a gift from the citizens of Hordaland to mark the help given by the Scots to Norway during WWII.

James Gammell added: “As always we will be offering a little magic at Conifox Adventure Park, with our annual Christmas tree market, where we will have hundreds of beautiful firs ready to take home and enjoy.

“Remember to stop by and pick yours after your trip through our Christmas Drive-Thru Experience.”

Available from late November 4, 14ft Nordmann Firs, Norway Spruces and Fraser Firs will be stocked and displayed at Conifox Adventure Park ready to be netted and taken away, or delivered in Edinburgh, South Queensferry, West Lothian and more.

Those with tickets to the park’s Christmas Drive-thru will be enticed to shop their at-home range of real trees before or after their visit, to further experience the magic.
