Two more charged for city centre thefts

Police have arrested and charged a 24 year old and 28 year old woman for thefts from handbags in the city centre.

On Monday, a 91 year old woman was in a shop on Shandwick Place when two women distracted her and stole an envelope containing cash from her handbag.

Later in the day, a 68 year old woman was within the Christmas Market when two women reached into her handbag and stole her purse.

Inspector Trish Robertson from the West End Police Station said: “Our officers worked swiftly to identify and trace the two women who were responsible for these thefts. They were arrested, charged and held in custody to appear at court on Tuesday.

“As well as officers on patrol in the city centre, we have our Pop-Up Police Station which you can visit for any general crime prevention advice. Our officers there will be handing out ‘purse bells’ between 11am and 2pm which you can attach to your purse or bag which helps alert you of any movement if someone is trying to steal them.

“Please report any suspicious behaviour and remain vigilant when you’re out and about.

“Anyone with information regarding such offences are asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
