Jersey Boys leaves Playhouse audience ‘beggin’ for more

The Jersey Boys tour has been on the road since December 2017 and the musical that tells the colourful story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons reached Edinburgh this week. It’s been worth the wait: the award-winning show is a delight not only for ‘seasoned’ fans but for everybody who enjoys a memorable night out.

Jersey Boys tells the Four Seasons’ story through the recollections of the band members themselves. Four band members, four different opinions but it’s a story well told with wise-cracking ‘Noo Joisey’ humour: the triumphs and heartbreaks, the relationships, the colourful characters, the fall outs …

And of course, it’s told through music. The Four Seasons have amassed an incredible catalogue of huge hits over the decades, and the problem for the show’s creators must have been just what to leave out! They have got it just right, though, and all the favourites are in there … and they were loudly cheered by an appreciative Edinburgh audience.

The show’s been on the road for a while, and it shows in a good way: it’s as fresh as ever – the dance routines are slick and the dialogue and wise-cracking keeps the show moving along at a cracking rock’n’roll pace.

The accomplished lead cast members Michael Watson (Frankie Valli), Simon Bailey (Tommy De Vito), Declan Egan (Bob Gaudio) and Lewis Griffiths (Nick Massi) more than did justice to those Four Seasons classics and the characters sparked off each other really well. Their performances were strongly supported by an enthusiastic ensemble who helped to make this show an unforgettable experience.

“They’re leaving. Why does everybody have to leave?” Frankie Valli asks at one point during the show. The Playhouse audience had to leave, too … but they left happy with their heads filled with some fantastic tunes.

Jersey Boys is at the Edinburgh Playhouse until 2 March. Catch the show if you can.
