An Edinburgh company which makes safe and stylish teething jewellery for mums has been shortlisted in two categories in one of the UK’s premium awards for baby and toddler products.
Num Num Teething Jewellery, founded by Edinburgh mum, Jen Downie, has been nominated in the “Teething Jewellery” and “Baby Wearing Accessory” categories of the 2017 Best Baby and Toddler Gear Awards (Mumii Awards). The necklaces can be bought online but are also available to buy in three shops in Edinburgh: Willow Boutique in Stockbridge, Maddie & Marks in Blackhall and Pippin in Halymarket.
The Mumii Awards are recognised by industry insiders and consumers alike, with logos featuring on high profile TV ads, as the crème de la crème of parenting awards. This is thanks to the vigorous testing system whereby hundreds of parents’ test each and every item. It allows big and small brands to compete for the coveted awards.
In addition to the main awards, there will be a consumer choice award for each category which members of the public opening in July where members of the public can vote and Jen is hoping local people will lend her their support.
The latest success for Num Num comes after Jen she won “Small Business Sunday” last year, a social media competition run by Theo Paphitis, best known for his appearances on the BBC TV show, Dragon’s Den. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength, with online sales increasing and Num Num products now stocked in 15 shops across the UK, including Kiddiecare one of the largest retailers in the country.
Jen setup the business two years ago after she wasn’t able to find a suitable and stylish necklace to wear when her daughter, Hannah, started teething. Num Num Teething Jewellery provides more than just a stylish necklace for mums, they are teethers on the go for babies and fun for babies to play with when they are breastfeeding or being carried.
Num Num’s teething necklaces come in a variety of designs, assembled by hand, and are practical, fun and beautiful for mums to wear. The beads used are made from squeezable food-grade silicone (the same material as a dummy or bottle teat) which is flexible yet firm. It is perfect for chewing on as it provides a firm and satisfying chew for babies while being kind to tender gums.
As a mum with a new baby herself, safety is very important to Jen. The beads are fully tested and meet European safety standards. They also have a breakaway clasp which safely pops apart when pulled and just as easily pops back together again. All of the necklaces can also be safely washed and sterilised.
Jen Downie, Owner and Designer of Num Num Teething Jewellery, said: “It’s fantastic to get shortlisted for two major awards in one of the UK’s most well-known competitions for this sector and against much larger companies.
“We have been working for the past year to increase our sales online as well as in outlets in Edinburgh and around the UK. It’s been going really well so hopefully this is another step on the road to growing the company in the future.
“Hopefully we can pick up one of the awards when they are announced and I hope the people of Edinburgh will support a local company when the vote for the consumer award opens to the public next month.”
Jo Studholme, Editor of Mumii, who organise the awards, said: “We are thrilled to announce the shortlisted products for this year’s Best Baby and Toddler Gear Awards. This is the 5th year of the Awards and the shortlisted products really have lifted the bench mark meaning that the next stage of thorough consumer testing is going to be a tough one for all those involved.’
