Before and After Coal | Images and Voices from Scotland’s Mining Communities | National Galleries of Scotland

It’s 40 years since the Miners’ Strike in 1984. Come to the Portrait gallery in Edinburgh and explore the history and lasting impact of coal, through photographs and voices from Scottish mining communities.

More than an exercise in nostalgia, Before and After Coal is a collaboration between artist Nicky Bird, the National Galleries of Scotland and mining communities across Scotland. There are over 70 works on display, including photographs, banners and contact sheets documenting real lives and lived experiences. This exhibition illustrates Scotland’s mining history, and is told by those who shaped it, lived it, and continue to be impacted by it. Their stories focus on themes of family, community spirit, work and place, expressing ideas and feelings about what has changed and what has endured.

Free to visit, Before and After Coal: Images and Voices from Scotland’s mining communities runs from 23 March to 15 September 2024.
