Goodbye, Mr Gilchrist!

Craigroyston Primary School bade the fondest of farewells to their much-loved ‘jannie’ Brian Gilchrist yesterday.

Brian has been a janitor in North Edinburgh for almost 42 years, starting at the old Craigroyston Community High School at the top of Pennywell Road before moving to Muirhouse Primary and then the new Craigroyston Primary School when it opened in autumn 2002.

Over all those years Brian has supported generations of North Edinburgh children and warm tributes were paid by the latest generation at a special assembly at Craigroyston Primary School yesterday attended by friends, family and colleagues past and present.

There was a wealth of gifts for the hugely popular janitor: a magnificent golden plunger, books, a set of keys made by the school children, a signed Hibernian football – Brian has been a huge supporter of local schools football over many years – and even his very own song: the Twelve Days of Christmas will never be the same again!

Twelve staff cars humming

Eleven children griping

Ten sinks a seeping

Nine tannoys announcing

Eight tubs need milk in

Seven toilets brimming

Six tables need laying

FIVE KEY KINGS!

Four graffii words

Three Amey men

Two tubber gloves

and

A hula hoop stuck up in a tree!

Bye, bye, Brian – enjoy your well-earned retirement with Linda. You leave with the best wishes of thousands of local children you have supported over the years
