Green Pencil Award – Going, going, gone: Scotland’s wildlife in danger?

Our successful environmentally themed creative writing competition, open to all P4-P7 aged children in Edinburgh and, once again, to young people in S1-3, is running again this year.

A lot of attention has been given recently to climate change and its effects on the natural environment, so this year our theme is, ‘Going, Going, Gone -Scottish Wildlife in Danger?’Scotland is home to a diverse range of wildlife, and it’s easy to see some of these from coast to countryside. Not all wild Scottish animals are endangered, but some such as the pine marten and the red squirrel are at particular risk.

We want to encourage our children and young people to write imaginatively about this wildlife, and their feelings about it. This could be by writing about a particular species of bird, mammal, insect or sea creature, a time when they have been seen at close quarters, or an animal or bird that has a special connection to the writer.

The golden eagle, wildcat, bottle-nosed dolphin, red squirrel and pine marten are all protected species, but our young writers could also choose to write about the capercaillie, mountain hare, orca, puffin or even the damselfly or honey bee!

The possibilities are endless – haiku or prose, a poem or imaginative tale; a creative kenning or ballad; a story inspired by a visit or holiday. It is up to you!

All we ask is that writing is the author’s own work and is no longer than one side of A4 paper.

The competition launched on 29th August with a 11th October closing date and a final awards ceremony at Central Library on the 21st November.
