Opportunity for Sports Clubs to bag Aldi funding boost

Applications are now open for the Aldi Scottish Sport Fund, with clubs located across the Lothians and the Scottish Borders invited to apply for a share of £50,000.

Now in its fourth year, Aldi’s Scottish Sport Fund is an initiative that aims to help people of all ages take part in physical activity within their local communities by giving clubs the chance to secure up to £500 funding.

Since launching in 2016, over 250 clubs across Scotland have benefitted from a funding boost of more than £140,000, helping to improve community access to sports across the country.

In 2018, the Aldi Scottish Sport Fund supported a number of clubs across the Lothians and the Scottish Borders including the West Lothian Wolves Basketball Club, Boroughmuir Thistle Football Club, Meadowbank Gymnastics Club and Selkirk Tennis Club.

This year, as Aldi Scotland celebrates its 25th anniversary, the supermarket hopes to be able to help even more clubs in the region.

The Aldi Scottish Sport Fund is open to any sporting organisation in Scotland that meets the application criteria, from rugby clubs to after school groups and everything in between.

Groups can apply for funding for a wide range of purposes, including new strips and equipment or to put towards the cost of training facilities and coaching.

Richard Holloway, Regional Managing Director for Aldi Scotland, said: “As official sponsors of Team GB, we wanted to create a lasting legacy from the Olympic and Olympic Winter Games and make it easier for people across the country to access sport within their local communities.

“The Aldi Scottish Sport Fund does just that, it is our way of giving local clubs a helping hand to continue the fantastic work they do in their communities, and helping people across Scotland to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.

“Each year, we are blown away by the response we get to our call for applications and I’d encourage any sports club across the Lothians and the Scottish Borders to apply.”

Team GB athlete, curling’s Eve Muirhead, said: “Aldi’s continued efforts to help provide sports clubs in Scotland with invaluable financial support is so important for future generations.

Sport in local communities is a driving force in nurturing potential and every penny counts for these organisations. Whether it is put towards buying kit and equipment, or funding transport to competitions, it makes the world of difference to local sports clubs and their overall performance.”

Sports clubs located across the Lothians and the Scottish Borders have until Monday 30th September to apply for up to £500 funding. Applications can be made via www.aldi.co.uk/scottishsportfund.

All applications will be considered by the Aldi judging panel and entrants will be notified of the outcome of their funding application within four to six weeks from the region’s deadline. Please see the Aldi Scottish Sport Fund FAQs and Terms & Conditions for more information.
