Fort Kinnaird in Edinburgh is offering free sensory backpacks to make the experience of shopping and eating at the centre more accessible for people with autism or who have difficulty processing sensory information.
The backpacks, which were developed in partnership with the team at Fort Kinnaird’s Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse store, include ear defenders, ear plugs, non-verbal cards, a fidget spinner, a stress ball and a reusable water bottle.
The packs also include a social story, a map that breaks down all possible challenges people with autism might face during a visit to Fort Kinnaird, as well as details of where the bathrooms are located and what noises, smells and bright lights can be expected during a visit.
The backpacks have been endorsed by Scottish Autism, a national charity dedicated to helping autistic people lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives. The organisation has also provided postcards for the packs which include contact details for its Autism Advice Line.
Charlene Tait, Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Scottish Autism, said: “It is great to hear that Fort Kinnaird has developed sensory backpacks for customers, as well as a visual guide on what to expect in the centre.
“Shopping can be a stressful experience for some autistic people and their families due to the crowds, bright lights and music. We welcome initiatives such as these as they can support autistic people to prepare for, and access, a shopping environment, making for a more relaxed experience.”
Liam Smith, centre director at Fort Kinnaird, said: “We are passionate about making Fort Kinnaird accessible to all and want every visitor to feel welcome. When one of our colleagues suggested the idea of the backpacks, we jumped at the opportunity and got to work putting them together.
“Statistics show that 64%* of autistic people avoid going to the shops due to sensory overload, so we’re pleased to help in any way we can.”
Paul Hossack, Assistant Manager at Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse, said: “We’ve been so pleased to see our idea of the sensory backpacks coming to life after working with the wider Fort Kinnaird team. I believe this a great initiative.
“In our store, we’re continuously reviewing how we can adapt and improve our experience to ensure all shoppers can enjoy the amazing technology we have on offer. I’m sure the new packs will be a great addition to this and the centre as a whole.”
