Edinburgh runners bag miles of Oor Wullies

Fitness fanatics have taken on an Oor Wullie-themed charity challenge by running around the statues located all across Edinburgh.

Whereas most people opt to take a leisurely stroll around the city for Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail, running tour company Run the Sights picked up the pace to find as many sculptures as possible in one route.

Various groups of runners donned their trainers to take part in the tours, collecting a total of 35 Oor Wullies and taking in some of the capital’s most scenic spots along the way, including Carlton Hill, The Scottish Parliament and The Royal Mile.

Run the Sights led three separate tours over one weekend, with everyone involved clocking up an impressive total of 180 miles between them. The runners’ fitness feat raised £150 for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHC) – one of the three charities that the BIG Bucket Trail is supporting.

Ali Wyllie, founder of Run the Sights, said: “The Oor Wullies have become hugely popular attractions across the city this summer so we wanted to create a way for people to see as many as possible, while also having fun and getting fit at the same time.

“It was absolutely pouring throughout the first tour but everyone was excited to see all the different statues and it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. The route also involved running up Carlton Hill to spot the two Wullies there, which was quite challenging but entirely worth it for the stunning views.

“We think the trail is absolutely fantastic and we’re very pleased to have had the opportunity to run to some of our favourite places while supporting ECHC.”

ECHC supports and complements the work of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) to help children and young people be a child first and a patient second.

Roslyn Neely, CEO of ECHC, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to Run the Sights for this incredible effort as Edinburgh is not an easy city to walk around, never mind run!

“We continue to be amazed by the number of people who are getting involved with Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail and we are so very grateful to everyone for their support. All the funds raised go to Scotland’s children’s hospital charities and enable us to continue with the vital, life-changing work that we do.”

At the end of Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail, the Edinburgh sculptures will be auctioned off at an invite-only event taking place on Thursday 19 September at Prestonfield House Stables.

ECHC believes that nothing should get in the way of being a child and works to make sure children and young people’s lives are less interrupted by illness. It distributes around £1.5 million per year to support the RHSC and other children’s healthcare settings across Scotland.
