A man has been arrested following the death of 49-year-old man outside Edinburgh City social club. The incident happened about 00:15 in the early hours of Sunday morning outside the club in Lochend Road South, which was formerly the Loch Inn.
The 49-year-old man – named locally as club regular Andy McCarron – was injured and taken to hospital where he died.
While a 42-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Det Ch Insp Graham Grant, of Police Scotland, said: “Our sympathies are with the family of the man who died as a result of this incident and we are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened.
“An arrest has been made, but we remain keen to speak with anyone who was in the area of Lochend Road South, at its junction with Sleigh Drive, during Saturday evening or into the early hours of Sunday morning and way have witnessed the disturbance.”
Edinburgh City FC Social Club has issued the following statement: “In light of the tragic events last night we would ask that respect for family privacy is most important at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with the family at this incredibly difficult time.”
A man has appeared in court charged with murder following the disturbance which led to the death of electrician Andrew McCarron.
Paul Smith, 42, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday 22 July. He made no plea to the murder charge and was remanded in custody.
Wednesday 24.07: Police have now officially confirmed the identity of a man who died following an incident in Lochend Road South.
He was Andrew McCarron, who was originally from Birmingham, but lived in Edinburgh.
The 49-year-old sustained serious injury after he was attacked at around 12.15am on Sunday 21st July, outside the Edinburgh City Football Club’s Social Club, formerly known as Loch Inn.
A 42-year-old man has been charged in connection with Andrew’s death and made a first appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday 22nd July.
In a statement issued through Police Scotland, the family of Andrew McCarron said, “Andrew was a loving family man, a kind soul and an Aston Villa fan through and through, who was sadly taken away from us on Sunday 21st July.
“He will be dearly missed by his parents, siblings, children, family and friends. The loss of our beloved Andrew is immeasurable, but so also, is the love he left behind. Rest in Peace, Andrew.
“We would like to request that we now be left in private to grieve.”
