Support ‘People’s Vote’ parties, urge pro-EU campaigners

The European Movement in Scotland, the country’s leading pro-EU campaigning organisation, has urged voters to back parties supporting a second EU referendum when they go to the polls in Thursday’s European Parliamentary elections.

The organisation is distributing thousands of leaflets urging voters to back political parties who are unequivocally backing a so-called People’s Vote on the UK’s membership of the EU, with the option to Remain on the ballot paper.

An increasing number of people want to see a second referendum as the Brexit shambles continues and the economic impacts become clearer.

A recent You Gov survey found that between the choice of Theresa May’s Brexit deal or remaining in the EU, 61% of those who confirmed they would vote stated they wanted the UK to stay in the European Union. And not a single one of over 50 polls conducted in the last year have shown a majority for Leaving.

Scottish Government research has also warned the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal could lead to a £9 billion GDP fall north of the border by 2030, threatening to make every person up to £1,600 worse off. Treasury analysis shows that the UK would be £40 billion worse off under Theresa May’s Brexit deal, and a staggering £150 billion worse off under a no-deal within 15 years.

The EU accounts for more than half of Scottish exports – worth £15.7 billion to our economy – blocking Scotland from trading freely with the European Union post-Brexit will be catastrophic to businesses here.

Mark Lazarowicz, Chair of the European Movement in Scotland, (above) commented: “There is a clear public demand for the holding of a second EU-referendum as Westminster remains deeply divided and the economic impacts of Brexit become clearer.

“It’s becoming obvious that the only way out of the deadlock is putting EU membership back to the people in a second referendum.

“The EU has brought countless benefits to Scotland – giving us the freedom of movement, supporting scientific research, strengthening our universities, providing funding for rural areas and safeguarding workers’ rights.

“Brexit will affect the current generation for years to come and it is vital for our democracy and our country that we have a People’s Vote and we would urge voters to back parties that support this position.”

While pro- and anti-Brexit parties are neck and neck in the latest opinion polls, Nigel Farage’s Brexit party is significantly ahead: if the polls are to be believed Brexit, the party with no manifesto, is on course to secure twice as many votes as any other party across the UK on Thursday.

There’s only one poll that really matters, of course …
