Children’s Lottery cash for Leith Rugby Youth Development

Edinburgh charity Leith Rugby Youth Development has been awarded a £3,285 grant from the Scottish Children’s Lottery.

The charity provides rugby coaching to the young people of Leith, using the physical, mental and social benefits of the sport to help address the social deprivation challenges facing some areas of Leith.

Leith Rugby Youth Development has worked with teachers, PE staff and the City’s sports development team to appoint and embed a dedicated and qualified rugby coach in each of the six local primary schools and in Leith Academy – a hugely successful programme which has delivered regular rugby coaching sessions to more than 1,200 boys and girls in the past year.

Russell Duncan, Treasurer of Leith Rugby Youth Development, said: “The much-needed and very much appreciated grant funding received from Scottish Children’s Lottery has arrived just at the right time to enable us to provide more local children with the necessary equipment and clothing to allow them to fully participate in our youth rugby programme.”

The Scottish Children’s Lottery was launched in October 2016 to raise money for children in Scotland, with proceeds helping to improve the lives of children right across the country and make a real difference to those who need it most.

Kirsteen Campbell is trustee of Chance to Connect, which operates as a society lottery under the Scottish Children’s Lottery. Chance to Connect supports projects working in the areas of community development and citizenship, giving young people across Scotland the chance to live in a safe, supportive and stimulating community.

Kirsteen Campbell said: “I am delighted that we are able to provide funding for Leith Rugby Youth Development from the money generated from the Scottish Children’s Lottery, which was established to promote and support the development and potential of children and young people in Scotland.

“Thank you to those who play the Scottish Children’s Lottery – you are helping to support the great work that our charities undertake.”
