Having a Spring clean? Don’t forget the shed!

With decluttering rapidly becoming the latest wellbeing buzzword, homeowners are being urged not to forget about the contents of their garden shed.

The experts at GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk believe sheds deserve some TLC too – and have compiled their five top tips for tackling the clutter.

Sheds are often the first place things get put when you no longer want them in the house, and can quickly become a dumping ground but investing a little time in sorting yours out could pay dividends.

The first step is the most difficult – finding the time to get stuck in. Depending on the state of your shed, this could be a day-long job but, if done well, it may be something you don’t need to do again for many years.

Think of it as creating an extra room in your house.

A spokesman for GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk said: “One of the great things about having a shed is all the extra space it offers, but often they simply become a place for all the things you can’t find a better home for.

“When was the last time you were able to walk right inside your shed and get to everything straight away?

“Streamlining its contents and making sure it only contain things you use regularly will make life much less stressful, and you may even free-up enough space to create your own little haven of calm away from your house.”

GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk’s top tips:

1. Give yourself enough time  – This isn’t likely to be a quick job. A thorough decluttering of your shed will take time and effort, but the results will save you time in the long run. No more searching through piles of stuff to get to the one thing you need. Imagine being able to go straight to what you want.

2. Don’t be afraid to get stuck in  – Start by getting everything out of the shed. This helps you to see exactly what’s been lurking in those cobwebby corners. The bike that your child no longer fits on, the rusty lawnmower blades. Chances are there will be a large number of things that can go straight in the bin or to the tip.

3. Be ruthless  – Making decisions on some items might be difficult, especially if they have sentimental value, but if you haven’t used it in the last 12 months the chances are you won’t use it again. If you really don’t want to bin things that are still in a usable condition, consider selling them on an auction site or donating them to charity.

4. Invest in storage boxes, shelves and hooks –  Getting organised is the key to successful decluttering. Grouping similar items together saves valuable time when looking for them next. See-through storage boxes are great for this, while adding shelving or hanging hooks on the wall can free up floor space and make your shed seem instantly larger.

5.Don’t forget the outside  – Once you’ve got the inside of your shed looking smart, it may highlight the poor condition of the outside. Spring is a great time to give your shed a coat of paint or varnish, and can transform it from a dull outbuilding to a key feature of your garden. Investing in a trellis or hanging baskets can also help to add some colour and interest.
