A group of Edinburgh College students have shown they have the cutting edge after winning nine medals at the UK’s largest hairdressing and beauty competition for students.
Eight students from the College’s Granton and Milton Road campuses scooped four gold, four silver and two fourth place finishes at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) Finals held at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.
Throughout the AHT competitions, students’ hairdressing, make-up and beauty therapy skills were put to the test in timed competitions including cutting, styling, body massage, red carpet and team events, consistently impressing the expert judging panel with their talents and stand-out looks.
The students created a range of bold, beautiful, weird and wonderful looks as they claimed medals in categories including: Character Make-up; Fantasy; Make-up; Ladies Evening Hairdressing; Ladies Cut and Blow Dry; Body Massage and Ladies Conversion.
The College’s gold medals came in the Fantasy Hair and Make-up section – where Radost Staykova and Rebecca Kerr claimed top spots – and the Ladies Evening Hairdressing category in which Radost claimed her second at the gold two-day event. A final gold came for Monika Domagala in the Massage competition.
Silver medals were awarded to Dalma Kauderer and Sally Ritchie for their performance in the Fantasy Hair and Make-up competition; to Ally Young in the Character Make-up; to Rebecca Kerr in Fantasy-Make-up; and to Kinga Raczkowska for Massage.
Lisa Black and Rachel Lillie Thomson were awarded fourth place in the Ladies Cut and Blow Dry and Ladies Conversion competitions respectively.
Double medallist Rebecca Kerr said: “I’m over the moon to have been awarded a gold and silver medal, it’s such a fantastic feeling. We’ve put lots of practice in at the College and it has been a brilliant experience coming down to Blackpool with all the other students and our lecturers to be part of this competition – I’ve had such a great time.”
Gold medallist Radost Staykova said: “It’s amazing to have won two gold medals at the national competition in Blackpool, I’m so proud. The whole event was spectacular with so many talented people all in one room creating all of these wonderful looks and styles – I loved it.”
The latest success comes after Edinburgh College won the Rose Bowl trophy for the most medals one at the AHT Scotland South heat held at the College’s Granton Campus for the first time in February.
Edinburgh College curriculum manager for Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Complementary Therapies Frances Bain said: “I’m so proud of each of our students who took part in the AHT National Final – they all put in outstanding performances and they should be so pleased with how they’ve done over the two days.
“Huge congratulations go to those who received medals and placings at the event, they have demonstrated their skills in such a high-pressure environment against students from across the UK – they were amazing, as well all our students and their models”.
