Edinburgh College’s curriculum leader has been highly commended by an industry body after he played a key role in enhancing the College’s automotive course, improving offering students and staff better prospects.
Automotive Engineering curriculum leader Sandy Bruce was recognised by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) for his contribution to the work of the IMI and for providing a high standard of qualification and progression routes for automotive students in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Sandy received his award from Prince Michael of Kent at a dinner and awards ceremony held in London. He was joined by the College’s Engineering curriculum manager Ross Milligan.
Sandy said: “I feel very privileged to have been highly commended by the IMI, it’s a fantastic feeling to be recognised for the work that has been done to enhance the Automotive course portfolio at Edinburgh College recently.
“The award is testament to the commitment of the entire Automotive team across both Midlothian and Sighthill campuses – thanks to everyone involved.
“Our students’ development is always our primary focus and the continuing partnership with the IMI will be of great benefit to them in their studies and their future careers in the motor industry.”
Sandy’s success follows the strengthening of the partnership between the College and the IMI. The IMI is now the awarding body for all VRQ and SVQ courses in light, heavy, body, paint and parts courses.
Following sustainable and environmental interest from the motor industry and the local community, Sandy has supported the introduction of commercial short courses in hybrid and electric vehicle technology and Air Conditioning F-Gas refrigerant handling.
The continuing growth of these short courses has also brought ‘train the trainer’ opportunities supported by Energy Skills Partnership to the College. These sessions provide qualifications to automotive lecturers from across Scotland’s colleges.
Sandy has been instrumental in adding courses with IMI Accreditation qualifications for senior paint technicians and electric vehicle technicians to the College’s automotive portfolio. These courses provide the qualifications necessary for insurance repairs and professional recognition.
In addition, the College was recently authorised as an IMI CPD Partner for electric and hybrid training programmes.
