The winners of the inaugural Edinburgh Asian Awards 2018 were revealed at a glittering awards dinner at Eskmills Venue on Sunday. The event was hosted by Sunoh Scotland, Edinburgh’s first and only Asian radio station which now broadcasts across central Scotland.
The full breakdown of award winners is:
Asian Young Talent: Zahra Ahmed (aged 9)
Asian Takeaway: Kebab Mahal
Asian Beauty Parlour: Singh Beauty Parlour
Aain Grocery Store: Global Foods
Asian Entrepreneur: Pryhas Choudhary
Asian Restaurant: Kebabish
Asian Outstanding Performer: Safyaan Sharif (cricketer)
Asian Voluntary Organisation: World Care Foundation
Asian Community Worker: Nasim Azad.
In addition to the nine category winners, the judges also announced the recipients of four special awards.
Aamer Anwar, human rights lawyer and current Rector of the University of Glasgow, was revealed as the winner of the Inspiring Role Model award.
The other three special awards presented were:
- Asian Cultural Champion of the Year – Rajnish Singh, President, Scottish Indian Arts Forum and Edinburgh & Lothians Regional Equality Council Office Bearer
- Special Tribute Award – Vipin Kumar (DJ Vips)
- Asian Event of the Year 2018 – Edinburgh Mela
Commenting on the awards, Sharjil Nawed, founder of Sunoh Scotland said: “The awards dinner was a great success and the responses from the winners were truly humbling.
“Given that this was the very first time we’d hosted the Edinburgh Asian Awards, we were absolutely delighted with the calibre and number of entries received. While all the winners were very deserving it’s a shame that there could be only one winner per category as there were some really inspiring and dedicated individuals on the list.
“We’ll definitely be back next year, bigger and better!”
