Leith Walk by-election hustings

Members of the public are being invited to quiz candidates contesting the forthcoming Leith Walk by-election at a hustings organised by the Save Leith Walk campaign.

Everyone is welcome to attend the event which takes place at Leith Theatre on Wednesday March 13 from 18.30 to 21.00. The meeting will include important news from Save Leith Walk which led the successful campaign to block demolition plans for the Art Deco sandstone building at Stead’s Place.

A SLW spokesman said: “The unanimous decision by councillors to reject the demolition and proposal for student flats and a hotel was a stunning victory for the people of Leith. It showed that local residents, businesses, elected representatives and community groups can influence what happens in their area.

“We have organised this public meeting and hustings to let people hear which of the by-election candidates has their best interests at heart. This community deserves someone who is going to fight on its behalf.

“Come to Leith Theatre on March 13, meet the candidates, and let your voice be heard.”

The Ward 12 by-election, triggered by the resignation of Labour councillor Marion Donaldson, will be held on Thursday 11 April.
