Achieve, Elevate and Inspire: Edinburgh women lead the way in national technology awards

The 2019 FDM everywoman in Technology Awards showcase the brightest talent in tech, from the UK and beyond

 

The finalists for the ninth annual FDM everywoman in Technology Awards, in association with The Tech She Can Charter, have just been announced. Taking place to celebrate International Women’s Day, the awards are a timely reminder that only 15% of people working in STEM roles in the UK are female and just 5% of leadership positions in the tech industry are held by women.*

Two women from Edinburgh are among the finalists: Marianne Lillian Breen-Hart,  Senior Manager at Accenture and Sharon Moore MBE, CTO for Travel and Transportation at IBM.  

They are both finalists in the “Leader” category, sponsored by BP – awarded to the woman operating in a senior technology role within her organisation, leading over 100 employees and making a contribution to the strategic direction of the business. 

About Sharon Moore MBE

Throughout her career, Sharon has served clients in Retail Banking, Insurance, Smarter Cities, and the Public Sector, and has built up specialist knowledge in engagement, intelligent systems, and systems integration.

In a consulting role, she was responsible for the successful design and delivery of the technical integration of a project worth over £300M. Sharon was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2018 for Services to Women in Technology Based Industries. She is also the BCS Women Deputy Chair, and under her leadership this last 12 months, the small BCSWomen Scotland team of volunteers has worked with Girl Guiding to introduce young women to digital careers. She also partnered withcodebar.io and CodeClan to break down the barriers to coding for women. In 2017, Phil Hussey, Vice President of IBM Industries Business Development Team, commented: “Of all my technical team Sharon makes the biggest impact – both internally and into the marketplace.

About Marianne Lillian Breen-Hart

Mara is an authentic leader who champions inclusion and diversity – leading a team for of 200 in the UK and heading campaigns to help reduce gender inequality in the workplace.

She also holds a regional role within the Scotland business where she mentors and coaches new joiners to the firm showing her commitment to developing others.  Alongside being a Senior Manager in the technology business within Accenture, she is also a trailblazer for her level, having achieved this position in under 8 years from joining as a new graduate. Mara has raised over £10,000 for charitable organisations over the last 3 years and has a commitment to helping others improve their lives through embracing new IT. She recently developed and designed a new IT showcase, showing her understanding of New IT and how it can change the lives of clients and customers. Mara is now the UKI Technology Inclusion and Diversity lead for Accent on Gender regularly running mentoring, presentations, coaching, peer coaching, networking events, organising blogs, and training to help others across the business. She also works with universities to develop future talent and promote STEM subjects by showing how you can have a successful technology career as a female leader.

The 2019 awards programme’s rally cry is “Achieve, Elevate and Inspire” and this year’s finalists, whilst diverse in many ways, all have something in common – they do just that. With so many talented women and men committed to being role models for positive change, this year, the awards shine the spotlight on 50 of the most talented individuals from the tech industry, from the UK and internationally.

Focusing on the entire length and breadth of the tech talent pipeline, finalists range from the “ones to watch” who are under the age of 16 and already inspiring other children to study STEM subjects, to young apprentices, women in academia, tech entrepreneurs and male agents of change.

“Research by PWC shows that there could be a £180billion boost to UK GDP just by increasing female employment rates**. This shows just how valuable female talent is and why this awards programme is so important in ensuring that more women enter the industry.”

Finalists include school students attending Clacton County High School in Essex, Mt St Michael Secondary School in Ireland, Bishop Gilpin in Wimbledon and Harris Academy in Bermondsey.
  • Apprentice Award – Finalists include young talent from Northumbrian Water, Deloitte and CGI
  • Rising Star Award – sponsored by T-Systems. Awarded to a woman aged under 26. This year’s finalists are employees of PwC, Whitbread and the Founder of Code Camp
  • Digital Star Award – sponsored by CGI. This year’s finalists are employees of Sainsbury’s Argos, BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, formerly Lloyds Banking Group, Accenture, Float Digital and the Department for Digital Culture, Media & Sport
  • Software Engineer Award – sponsored by NatWest. Finalists include the Founder of Trik and Software Engineers from American Express, PwC and Lloyds Banking Group
  • Academic Award – sponsored by Lloyds Banking. Awarded to a woman in academia who has made an outstanding contribution to technology and science. Finalists include two Readers from the University of Bath and the Head of Design and Technology at Ashlawn School
  • Team Leader Award – sponsored by American Express. This year’s finalists are from CGI, Barclays, Leeds Beckett University, Experian, Tata Consultancy Services and Deloitte
  • Entrepreneur Award – sponsored by IBM iX. The finalists are the Founders of Pivigo, Techsixtyfour, Recordsure and Blukudu
  • Innovator Award – sponsored by Equiniti. Finalists include women from Experian, American Express, and the Founders of Earthmiles and Akoni
