Building services contractor McGill goes into administration

Dundee-based building services contractor McGill has gone into administration with the loss of 374 jobs. Staff were told the news at meetings in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow yesterday.

The Dundee-based company, which has a wide range of contracts across Scotland including high-profile work in Edinburgh, serves clients in the residential, industrial and commercial sectors.

The company’s vehicles have been highly visible in North Edinburgh over the last year, carrying out upgrading refurbishment work to council housing across the area. Other McGill contracts in Edinburgh include student accommodation in Murano Place, the Quartermile site at the old Royal Infirmary and luxury apartments at Croythorn House in Ravelston(below).

McGill was one of Scotland’s most dynamic companies, becoming an Insider 500 company in 2015. Ironically, McGill’s website says this ‘confirms McGill as a major Scottish Company with a secure future with whom clients can do business with confidence and trust.’

It was formed in 1981 and made a pre-tax profit of £772,218 in the year to September 2017.

Among the redundancies are 100 apprentices and pre-apprentices directly employed – McGill had a policy of training their own workforce for the future, as well as providing training and employment opportunities for local people.

Joint administrators KPMG said McGill has been the victim of ‘challenging trading conditions’.

Joint administrator Blair Nimmo of KPMG said: “We will do everything we can to seek a buyer who may be able to protect some of the business and maximise recoveries for creditors.

“We would encourage any party who has an interest in acquiring any part of the business and its assets to contact us as soon as possible.

“We will be working with employees and have already initiated matters with relevant government agencies to ensure the full range of support is available to all those affected.”
