Heavy Sound project to feature in programme about STV Children’s Appeal

In 2018, the STV Children’s Appeal raised an incredible £2.5m for Scotland’s children, thanks to the generosity and fundraising efforts of schools, communities, businesses and individuals across the country.

In a special programme presented by STV News anchor Andrea Brymer on Friday 21st December at 2000, STV presenters Laura Boyd, Sean Batty and Chris Harvey, as well as Cabinet Secretary Aileen Campbell, visit some of the many projects that benefit from Appeal funding – including Heavy Sound in Edinburgh – to find out how the money is making a real difference in communities across Scotland.

STV Children’s Appeal: Where Your Money Went shines a light on the fantastic work taking place across Scotland to help children and young people affected by poverty.

Cabinet Secretary Aileen Campbell visits Heavy Sound which operates across Edinburgh and the Lothians, to see first-hand how the Appeal is making a difference in local communities. Heavy Sound delivers engaging music projects for young people who are identified as at-risk, disengaged with education, having experienced trauma and in areas of multiple deprivation.

Ms Campbell will meet 15-year-old Amalie and 17-year-old Sandi, who have both faced significant barriers and challenges in life but have found positive ways to express themselves, address challenges and re-engage with education through their involvement with Heavy Sound.

Jordan Butler, CEO of Heavy Sound, said: “Receiving this grant from the STV Children’s Appeal is huge for Heavy Sound. Not only does it help us to reach and include more young people, it also enables us to provide further opportunities to those who have worked with us to gain new positive experiences. Thank you, from everyone here at Heavy Sound.”

STV’s Andrea Brymer said: “Here we are in our eighth year of the STV Children’s Appeal and it just keeps getting better and better! Our amazing fundraisers have left us totally blown away, yet again, by throwing their weight behind our campaign to help children living in poverty in Scotland.

“This year we raised a phenomenal £2.5m and it’s already making an incredible difference to projects across the country. Raising the money is great fun but actually giving it to worthy causes, and seeing how even the smallest amounts can help, is the best part of our job by far.

Natalie Wright, campaign manager of STV Children’s Appeal, said: “In this programme we highlight some of the many incredible projects that we have been able to support in 2018, thanks to the money donated to the STV Children’s Appeal by fundraisers across the country.

“Every donation – no matter how big or small – helps make a difference in the lives of Scotland’s young people and we are so grateful for everyone’s generosity.

“We are now in the midst of planning another fantastic line-up of fundraising events and programming for 2019 with the continued support of communities across Scotland.”

In eight years the STV Children’s Appeal has raised over £19 million, with 1102 grants awarded to projects across all 32 local authority areas in Scotland – providing much needed support to over 79,000 children and young people. The money raised is distributed to provide practical help like food and warm clothes, create opportunities for training and employability, and enable social and emotional support for those who need it most.
