Port of Leith Housing Association and Persevere Developments are celebrating the official opening of 43 homes for mid market rent at the Ten Brunswick Road development built by CALA Homes (East).
The site, which was previously home to the Royal Mail Sorting Office, has been transformed to create a total of 175 one and two-bedroom homes in a popular neighbourhood where Leith meets the city centre.
The Scottish Government Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning, Kevin Stewart MSP, officially opened the development earlier today, with guests being invited to tour the grounds and view the homes.
The bright and modern homes, featuring private balconies with decking and Juliette balconies with enviable views across the city, are set within carefully landscaped communal areas.
Port of Leith Housing Association invested more than £5.8m into the development, including a Scottish Government Housing Association Grant of £1.2m.
Keith Anderson, Chief Executive of Port of Leith Housing Association, said: “We are thrilled to see people moving into these outstanding new homes which have transformed this part of Leith and created a new landmark where the Royal Mail Sorting Office once stood.
“With demand for high-quality, affordable homes so high, we are very proud to provide these brilliant places for people to call home with rents well below the level of the private rented sector.
“It really does feel like Christmas has come early for us this year and for everyone settling into their new homes.”
Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning, Kevin Stewart MSP said: “I’m delighted to be invited here to open these new build affordable homes which are a very welcome addition to the supply of affordable housing in Edinburgh.
“Making sure everyone has a safe, warm and affordable home is central to this Government’s drive to make our country fairer and more prosperous and this development demonstrates once again the Scottish Government’s commitment to the delivery of 50,000 new affordable homes this parliament.
“I am pleased that the Scottish Government were able to support Port of Leith Housing Association to deliver these homes with funding of more than £1 million.”
Ben Macpherson MSP for Edinburgh Northern and Leith said: “As the local MSP, I am pleased to see these new homes in the heart of my constituency. The Ten Brunswick Road development has boosted the supply of local housing in Leith and I particularly welcome within this the provision of more affordable housing delivered by Port of Leith Housing Association.
“Overall this CALA Homes development will make a significant contribution towards meeting the growing demand that there is to live in this vibrant area. It’s very important that more affordable housing is provided as Leith develops and housing associations like Port of Leith are playing a key role in that.”
