Edinburgh charity awarded £25,000 from the Scottish Children’s Lottery

Edinburgh-based charity Children’s University Scotland has been awarded a £25,000 grant from the Scottish Children’s Lottery.

The charity helps children overcome barriers to learning, allowing them to experience the joy of discovery, problem solving and creativity, as well as building essential life skills and enhancing overall wellbeing.

With the help of funding from the Scottish Children’s Lottery, the charity enables children and their families to find and take part in learning opportunities at home, in school and within the community, helping to inspire a love of learning that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Neil Mathers, Chief Executive at Children’s University Scotland, said: “Experiences outside school play a critical role in children’s development, but sadly many children face financial or other barriers that prevent them engaging in more structured learning outside school.

“Thanks to the Scottish Children’s Lottery, we can expand our programme to many more children and offer access to affordable, high quality out-of-school learning that raises aspirations, boosts achievement and helps each child to fulfil their potential.”

The Scottish Children’s Lottery was launched in October 2016 to raise money for children in Scotland, with proceeds helping to improve the lives of children right across the country and make a real difference to those who need it most.

Dorothy Fenwick is trustee of Chance to Study which operates as a society lottery under the Scottish Children’s Lottery. Chance to Study supports projects which aim to improve children’s education through their school years and into young adulthood, and ensure that all young people in Scotland have the opportunity to learn, develop and fulfil their potential.

Dorothy Fenwick said: “Chance to Study believes that every child, no matter their background, should be able to maximise all the opportunities open to them during their school life, gaining the knowledge and experience that will help them take their place in society.

“I am delighted that this grant will support the valuable work of Children’s University Scotland. Thank you to those who play the Scottish Children’s Lottery, you are helping to support the great work that our charities undertake.”
