Miles Briggs: New Transport Secretary puts the handbrake on improvements to Edinburgh City Bypass

In May this year Miles led a debate at Holyrood on the development of Edinburgh City bypass due to the excessive congestion at rush hour every day.  During the debate Miles received assurances from the then Transport secretary Humza Yousaf that the Edinburgh City Bypass was a priority for the Scottish Government.

When Michael Matheson took over as Transport Secretary Miles wrote to him for confirmation that Edinburgh City Bypass would continue to be a priority for the Scottish Government.

This week at General Questions Miles asked for a timetable for when capacity issues on Edinburgh City Bypass would be addressed – but the answer failed to provide a time frame and only referred to a review of the Strategic Transport Projects Review.

Edinburgh City’s bypass over congestion is an issue that Miles has campaigned on since his election in 2016.

Miles Briggs, Scottish Conservative Lothian MSP, said: “I am very disappointed that Mr Matheson failed to provide a timetable for the Scottish Government addressing capacity issues on the Edinburgh City Bypass.

“I was concerned that a change in personnel of SNP cabinet Ministers would mean that Edinburgh City’s Bypass would be forgotten and this appears to be what has happened.

“Edinburgh and Lothian are the fastest growing regions in Scotland and the Edinburgh City Bypass has been over capacity for many years now.

“I will continue to campaign for the development of Edinburg City Bypass that causes commuters across Lothian agonisingly long waits on a daily basis.”
