Hello, and welcome to the latest edition of Weekly Roundup, bringing you the best in Scottish policing news from the past seven days.
This week kicked off with the launch of our annual Student Safety campaign, which is aimed at providing essential keep safe tips and information to those embarking on further education ventures. Chief Superintendent John McKenzie, from the Safer Communities Department, said, “It’s an exciting time for people starting university and college courses. Everyone who’s gone to university will remember the stress of sorting out accommodation and going to their first Freshers’ Week. We have been working with partners to help and offer advice, and hopefully make it as stress free as possible.”
Also this week, we interviewed some of our highest ranking female officers, who were more than happy to give us their insights into what it’s like being part of Police Scotland’s Executive Team. You can read this article featuring DCC Fiona Taylor and ACCs Gillian MacDonald and Angie McLaren here.
We’ve also been getting into the sporty swing of things recently, and spent some time speaking to the officers helping make the Glasgow 2018 Athletics Championships the roaring success it was. See how we got on below, and read the full featured article here.
In other news, a man caught in possession of explosive items and extreme right-wing paraphernelia was jailed this week at the High Court in Edinburgh, being found guilty of three offences under the Terrorism and Explosive Substances acts.
Meanwhile, at the High Court in Glasgow, a man was sentenced to prison for multiple sexual offences against young girls between 2009 and 2017.
Other arrests and convictions this week include a man charged with thefts from six cars in the Grange area of Edinburgh, and a man charged with housebreaking in the Duddingston area of the city.
And finally, the big news this week was the announcement of our new Chief Constable, Iain Livingstone, who after landing the appointment, met up with Cabinet Secretary for Justice Humza Yousaf and SPA Chair Susan Deacon. Commenting on his new role, CC Livingstone said, “I am extremely proud and humbled to be appointed as Scotland’s next Chief Constable. It is a great responsibility and opportunity to lead a 22,000 strong team of dedicated and committed professionals, and to harness their ideas and potential in the service of the people of Scotland.”
That’s it for this week. Stay safe, have a great weekend, and we’ll see you again next Friday.
