Half a welcome for Mr President?

DONALD Trump’s Scotland visit may be marked with protests, but nearly half (49%) of Scots say they would not back a ban on him coming as it would be against the principles of free speech.

Thirty-eight per cent of Scots said they would back a ban on the President coming to the country, with 83% of those saying it is because of his attitude towards women.

And Scots are the most pessimistic people in the UK when it comes to the so-called ‘Special Relationship’ – with nearly half (46%) saying there is no such relationship any more.

A survey by Atomik Research has shown that:

·         Nearly eight in ten (79%) of Scots say they would back a ban because of policies that led to children being split up from their parents at the Mexican border and 74% because of his refusal to enforce stricter gun controls

·         Scots who would not back a ban say any move would be against the principle of free speech (65%) and 51% say the leader of the Free World  should always be welcomed

·         Nearly a quarter (23%) of Scots believe Brexit will bring the UK and the US closer together while 19% believe the two countries will be driven further apart

The Presidential visit has sparked most fury among Millennials across the country.

Anger at the President’s visit is highest among those aged 25-34 in the UK, with 65% saying Mr Trump should have been banned from entering the country.

This was compared to 52% of 35-44s, 39% of 18-24-year-olds, 29% of those aged 45-54, one third (33%) of 55-64-year-olds and 34% of over-65s.

And more than half (55%) of Millennials across the country said they backed protests against the President during his stay in the UK.

Three in ten (31%) of Scots were in favour of plans to fly a giant inflatable depicting Donald Trump in a nappy over Westminster, but 48% disapproved.

Scots’ other choices for politicians to be depicted as giant flying babies were Boris Johnson (32%), Theresa May (22%) and Jacob Rees-Mogg (19%).
