Best Bar None: Edinburgh’s licensed venues encouraged to sign up

Licensed premises in Edinburgh are being encouraged to take part in Best Bar None, which launched this month. The national accreditation and award scheme aims to raise standards amongst licensed venues, recognising positive management helping to facilitate safe and enjoyable nights out for the public.

Best Bar None Edinburgh is a joint initiative between the City of Edinburgh Council, the Edinburgh Licensing Board, Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the Scottish Business Resilience Centre and the city’s licence holders.

Licensed businesses are invited to apply for the scheme in order to receive an inspection and score based on Licensing Scotland objectives. High scorers will be invited to an awards ceremony later this year, where venues will receive gold, silver and bronze accreditation, as well as being recognised in categories such as best pub and best nightclub. The best premises in each category will then be put forward for the Best Bar None National Awards to be held next year.

Councillor Norman Work, Edinburgh Licencing Board Convener, said: “This scheme is a fantastic opportunity to recognise venues committed to providing a safe and friendly atmosphere for customers. Last year we presented more gold awards to premises in Edinburgh than ever before and with over 400 businesses having now achieved accreditation since 2011, I look forward to this figure increasing year on year.”

Best Bar None, which was launched nationally in 2005, aims to promote social responsibility, diligent management and improved knowledge and skills across licensed premises, while reducing alcohol-related crime.

Last year, 43 Edinburgh venues achieved accreditation, with the Black Rose Tavern and Atik nightclub shortlisted for national awards.

Venues should apply to take part in the scheme by the end of July on the Best Bar None website.
