The makers of the brand new official version of Edinburgh MONOPOLY are facing a huge dilemma. They are not sure which sport has a monopoly on Edinburgh hearts – and they are sending out a plea to the public today as they need to find out fast as the game is hitting shop shelves in time for this Christmas.
It could be a miniature football (the city boasts two top flight clubs in Hearts and Hibs), a rugby ball (Edinburgh is the official home of Scottish international rugby union) or a golf ball (it is reputed that the first rules were devised in Leith in 1744). The city also boasts a racecourse in Musselburgh and is home to lots of other sports including cricket – Scotland defeated the auld enemy at Grange in Stockbridge just last week – and tennis.
It was announced in April that Edinburgh is getting a new game for a new generation. Poll lines were opened at the time of the announcement. And since then votes and suggestions have been pouring in. Polls have RE-OPENED for one week to decide this sporting conundrum.
The new board will see the first time ever in Scotland the playing tokens will be customised to one city.
Amongst the tokens could be a penguin, comedic mask and miniature castle.
There will be six in all. Winning Moves UK’s Benjamin Thompson says: “The tokens will reflect the city. One will define tourism. Another will celebrate comedy. And one of the six will be dedicated to sport. On this we have no clear cut winner at the moment.”
Going on to talk about the game in general Mr Thompson – Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK, who are the makers of this new board under license from MONOPOLY owners Hasbro – adds: “We are now a whole generation on from when Edinburgh first historically ‘Passed GO’ – the very first city in the UK to do so back in 1998.
“Scotland’s capital city has grown and changed enormously, now with its own Parliament and a whole new generation of people.”
“The tokens are being customised for the first time in Scotland and will all be dedicated to Edinburgh. The MONOPOLY streets will all be Edinburgh landmarks and also new will be the Chance and Community Chest cards which will be very heavily Edinburgh themed. So fat the Castle, the Royal Mile and a call for a penguin and a Greyfriars Bobby token have been the most popular suggestions in the voting. Thank you to everyone the response has been fantastic.”
