Score draw for Cash for Kids as city football fans dig deep

Generous Edinburgh football fans have helped raise thousands of pounds for local children following the latest fundraising drive on behalf of Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids.

Supporters were asked to bring unused clothes to recent Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian football matches, to be recycled in return for donations to the local charity.

The initiative was organised in partnership with the UK’s largest recycling organisation, Nathan’s Wastesavers, which ships unwanted clothes to developing countries throughout the world. £1,969.84 was raised, but the organisation has generously offered to equal the amount generated at both matches, bringing the total to £2,303.

The recycling project comes ahead of a busy few months for Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids, which provides help to community groups and young people throughout the region, affected by disability or poverty. Next month, presenters at Radio Forth will be donning their lycra and encouraging other businesses to do the same for Superheroes Day. Meanwhile, final preparations are underway ahead of the gruelling Tour de Forth event in June, which sees cyclists from across Scotland competing in a 97.3km race throughout the region.

Emma Kemp, Charity Manager at Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids, said: “A huge thanks to all the Hibs and Hearts fans who brought their old clothes to the recent games. The recycling is converted into cash, which is used to help disadvantaged children in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife, so every supporter should be proud to know that they’ve done their bit to help young people right here in our region.

“We already work with Nathan’s Wastesavers on projects, including our recycling bins at major supermarkets, including Asda, but we’re keen to broaden it out as it helps to generate much needed funding and offers a sustainable solution to global environmental challenges. If any business or individual is interested in getting involved, get in touch. It’s great to know that clearing out the clutter ahead of the summer can make such a positive difference to people’s lives.”
