British Heart Foundation Scotland wants to hear about your Heart Heroes

Do you know a Heart Hero? British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland is on the lookout for its Heart Heroes of 2018 and the public is invited to make nominations.

The awards recognise the different ways people fight heart disease and will be presented at a gala awards dinner in London. There are three categories: Healthcare Hero, Young Heart Hero and the Inspiration Award.

The Healthcare Hero award will recognise a healthcare professional, or someone working in a healthcare setting, who has made a special effort to make a difference to the life of a heart patient or their family.

The Young Heart Hero award will go to an exceptional person under the age of 18 years who has done something amazing for BHF Scotland and is a source of inspiration to others.

The Inspiration award will recognise a person who inspires others through their determination and dedication, whether that’s through their fundraising efforts, taking part in a physical challenge, organising an event or through their volunteering activities.

Nominations are open until 11 May at 4pm. The winners will be announced at a gala awards dinner in London on 5 October 2018.

Last year, six-year-old Scarlett Dougan from Glasgow was a Heart Hero Award winner. Scarlett was born with a heart condition and has had several major operations, but she doesn’t let that hold her back. Scarlett and her family raise awareness of BHF Scotland’s work and raise around £15,000 each year at Scarlett’s Ball, which is added to by fundraising in Scarlett’s school.

James Cant, Director of BHF Scotland, said: “Heart and circulatory disease affects the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across Scotland. Yet, there are so many ordinary people who, when confronted with that challenge, are doing extraordinary things, like Scarlett and her family.

“Our Heart Hero Awards recognise and celebrate the efforts of those who are working selflessly to make life better for other people. So if you know someone who is making a difference then please put their name forward so that their contribution can be recognised and honoured.”
