From Morningside to Muirhouse: Moderator visits Centipede Project

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Rev. Dr Derek Browning, visited Muirhouse on Thursday to see first hand the impact the Centipede Project is having in one of the capital’s most deprived areas.

The Moderator was welcomed by parishioners and representatives of the Centipede Project at the Old Kirk and Muirhouse Parish Church in Muirhouse Parkway, where he learned about the Centipede Project’s multi-faceted approach to regenerating community spirit. The group went on to visit some of the Centipede’s environmental initiatives in the local area before returning to the church where the Moderator planted a pear tree.

Last year, when asked to look forward to his moderatorial year ahead, Dr Browning said: “During my year in office I will seek to explore and promote issues around hospitality and welcome.” Well, he couldn’t have received a warmer welcome in Muirhouse – and the sun almost made an appearance too!

It was a busy day for the Moderator’s team. After the Muirhouse visit, the entourage moved on to Duddingston before another journey back across town for a session in Clermiston. Doubtless many more warm welcomes await over the coming months.
