Briggs urges progress on cross-boundary health planning

Briggs Calls for More Progress on Development of New Edinburgh and South East of Scotland Centre

Tory health spokesman Miles Briggs spoke in the Procurement debate at Holyrood yesterday. The Lothian MSP spoke on improving and promoting regional procurement, using the example of when a number of health boards or local authorities pool resources to construct Regional Centres or projects that go across council boundaries.

Health Ministers have indicated that they expect NHS Health Boards to work to plan new and future NHS investments regionally. The future replacement of the Edinburgh and South East of Scotland Cancer Centre at the Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital is a good example of this, where a clear framework of how it is to be achieved is needed.

There has been £26m allocated to address some of the concerns with the current building but a long term replacement will be required.

Miles Briggs commented: “I support NHS Health Boards working together to plan NHS investments regionally, however it is clear that we need to see more progress and clear frameworks for how this will be achieved.

“NHS Lothian are in the process of developing a business case for a new world-leading cancer centre in NHS Lothian and work is on-going which I welcome.  future replacement of the Edinburgh and South East of Scotland Cancer Centre needs to be developed with a regional funding approach from Health Boards which cover the South East Region.

“I think it is important that as the Scottish Government and Health Boards move towards this regional approach to plan and fund new developments in our NHS we have better frameworks in place as it is not currently clear how this regional approach will be achieved.”
