With The Doo’Cot currently in darkness looking for new management, Mackenzies closed and The Gunner all but gone, it’s getting increasingly difficult to get a drink in North Edinburgh.
The smoking ban, stricter drink drive laws, the economic crash and resultant austerity and changing social habits have all had a negative effect on patronage over recent years, and the days of packed pubs being the beating heart of their communities appear to be over.
Times are certainly tough in the hospitality trade – restaurants are feeling the icy blast of shrinking spending too – and our local hostelries can do with all the support they can get.
So enjoy and appreciate the different delights of The Anchor, The Ferry Boat, The Telford Arms, The Norhet and The Old Inn (although perhaps not in one session!) Use them or lose them, as they say.
