Edinburgh College hairdressing students are a cut above

Three Edinburgh College hairdressing students proved to be a cut above the rest as they scooped medals at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) South Scotland regional competition.

The students picked up two gold medals and a silver at the annual south Scotland heat of the competition held in Coatbridge. Their hairdressing skills were put to the test in timed competitions including cutting, styling, red carpet and team events, and they impressed the expert judging panel with their talents and stand-out looks.

Eighteen students represented the college at the competition, with Melissa Moor winning gold in the First-Year Commercial Blow Dry category, Hayley McEwan picking up gold in the Ladies Commercial Cut and Blow Dry category, and Sun Yim Chang winning silver in the Ladies Evening Style category.

The students fought off stiff competition from other hairdressing talents from colleges in south Scotland to win their medals and will compete in the UK AHT national finals at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on 11 and 12 March 2018.

The college has enjoyed previous success at the AHT competition, picking up a plethora of medals in previous years.

Edinburgh College Hair and Beauty lecturer Jackie Steele said: “The students involved in the competition have to be focused and committed to competing and all that it involves – sometimes sweat and tears. They work hard during class time and their own time to perfect their looks ahead of the event.

“Competing gives them an opportunity to build their confidence and helps to prepare them for the world of work. This year’s competitors have shown how extremely talented they are and I’m looking forward to seeing what they produce during the national finals.”

Edinburgh College curriculum manager for Hairdressing, Beauty & Complementary Therapies Frances Bain said: “I am so very proud of all of our students who took part in the AHT competition. They are a credit to Edinburgh College – their ambition, drive and sheer enthusiasm will follow them throughout their future careers.

“The staff continuously raise the bar and encourage excellence and creativity in every aspect of the curriculum, and the time and effort that they, and the students, have invested has led to these amazing results. It’s a proud achievement for Edinburgh College’s Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy department.  I am truly in awe of the amazing work they have produced, once again showing that hairdressing is a true art.”

Hairdressing student Hayley McEwan said: “It was an amazing opportunity to go to the competition and compete against other students in Scotland. The standard of everyone’s work was so high and I really didn’t think that my name would be called, I was shocked. I can’t wait to go to Blackpool for the national finals, I’ve been working on my looks and hope to impress the judges again.”
