Who are Scotland’s best bakers?

SCOTTISH Bakers, the organisation which supports bakers up and down the land, is calling on the nation’s bread, pie and pastry lovers to vote  now at www.scottishbakers.org/vote2018 for their favourite local baker to help them win the Scottish Baker of the Year crown for 2018.

To mark the start of the competition, young people from Pennyland Primary School, Miller Academy, Mount Pleasant Primary School, Thurso High School and North Highland College came together to take part in a ‘Generation Game’-style bake-off.

Current champs, Reids of Caithness, played host to the official launch of the competition with reigning champ, Gary Reid, and couture cake queen, Mich Turner MBE, Scottish Bakers ambassador, setting the tasks.

In this, the year of the Young Person, ten willing participants:

  • Applied jam and icing to Empire Biscuits
  • Creamed and jammed a strawberry tart
  • Applied cream filling to Cream Yum Yums
  • And the ‘icing on the cake’, the Mich Turner’s technical challenge was to ice and decorate a finger bun to her exacting standards!

The current Scottish Baker of the Year, Gary Reid, said: “We have been delighted to welcome students from all of our local schools today and to show them some of the skills we take such pride in at Reids. But it was also really great to see the range of skills that these young people, all keen home bakers, already have, some stars of the future I think.”

The Scottish Baker of the Year Awards is the brainchild of Scottish Bakers, the trade association for bakers in Scotland who decided to search for the best baker in the land in 2012.

Now in its seventh year, the competition celebrates our love of a tasty treat from our local baker and aims to crown just one hard-working bakery, Scottish Baker of the Year.

Scottish Bakers will be asking customers across Scotland to vote for their favourite bakery items in the following categories: morning roll, scone, individual cake, savoury, biscuit, bread and new category, celebration cake, scoring each on appearance, freshness, taste and value for money. – and the overall winner will be crowned Scottish Baker of the Year!

“With thousands upon thousands of pies, scones, loaves, savoury items, morning rolls, individual cakes and biscuits sold in Scotland every day, our artisan bakers work hard to keep us all going,” says Scottish Bakers’ Alasdair Smith.

“This competition is based on real votes from real customers so we urge customers to vote for their best bites, every vote really does count – your local baker could take the title!”

Voting runs until 9th March so there is not much time to vote by logging on to

www.scottishbakers.org/vote2018

voting automatically enters you into a draw to win one of 7 Apple Watches.

Judging day will be 28th March at Carnegie Conference Centrein Dunfermline, and the winner will be announced at a glittering Gala dinner at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on Saturday 5th May.
