Arts the way to do it: getting creative at The Junction

Creative Express – Creative Canvases Exhibition

@ The Junction

On Friday 26 January, The Junction was proud to hold its first exhibition of work from their Creative Express arts program (writes Tessa Hughes). The event saw over 40 attendees, including friends and family of young people whose work was featured, as well as members of the local community and friends of The Junction. Thanks go out to Tesco Express on Great Junction Street, who provided a range of snacks for everyone who attended to enjoy.

The Creative Express service supports young people to explore health and wellbeing through creativity; whilst developing their awareness of the positive impact creativity can have on their wellbeing. These canvases were created in one-to-one sessions, larger one-off workshops, and in the weekly Creative Hours sessions.

Our Junction Youth Advisors – young people who volunteer to help develop our services – put in a fantastic amount of work, spending the evening giving small groups of people guided tours around the exhibition and answering questions. Attendees were invited to give a title to two of the canvases featured, one of which was a collaborative work by a group of 15 young people, staff and volunteers. This piece made a great impression on several people, and was mentioned a few times in the feedback forms, with one person calling it “innovative and inspirational”.

The Junction and Creative Express were very pleased with the turnout of the event, and received great feedback from attendees who were kind enough to visit our “Evaluation Station” on their way out:

  • “I thought the standard of the art was fantastic and showed how expressive and thoughtful the artists were. Many of them were so good I would love to hang them on my walls.”
  • “Colourful, creative and confident work. Was nice to see also work in progress.”
  • “Very inspiring and uplifting.”
  • “The Exhibition was a great way to learn how to refer/support young people to access your services. Lovely positive spaces!”
