Appeal for support as more local children lose their homes

There will be a screening of a new film made by local women today (Friday 23 June) at 4pm in North Edinburgh Arts.

The film highlights  the  major problems  women are facing due to recent welfare reforms.  An exhibition about the campaign to stop local families being evicted from their homes due to the benefit cap will also be on display. Sadly another family lost  their home yesterday and are now in Bed and Breakfast accommodation.

This  means that seven children from North Edinburgh  have been made homeless in the last four days – and we know that this is the tip of the iceberg!  If you are interested in finding out more about this issue and would like to know how you can  get involved in the campaign, come along this afternoon.  Your support would be appreciated.

Stop the Evictions

INFORMATION UPDATE

Single parents with a child under two have won a court challenge as they face ‘real misery’ from the Westminster government’s benefits cap.

A High Court judge said yesterday the cap was not intended to cover such households, had ‘no good purpose’, and the failure to exempt them was discriminatory.

The government intends to appeal and said there will be no change to the cap while the appeal process is ongoing.

The cap limits the income households receive in certain benefits – it’s currently set at £20,000 for those who live outside London. Parents must work for at least 16 hours a week to avoid the cap.
