Cruelty Free International has welcomed the support of local MEP David Martin in calling for a global ban on cosmetics testing on animals. David Martin, one of the six MEPs representing Scotland in Brussels, has backed the Cruelty Free International campaign seeking a UN resolution to end the suffering of animals for cosmetics worldwide.
Before going into politics Martin, who is the European Parliament’s longest serving UK member, campaigned for animal protection. The Edinburgh-born MEP is now the spokesperson on international trade for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and the Honorary Secretary of the European Parliament Intergroup on Animal Welfare.
David Martin said: “I was a member of the European Parliament when the very first proposal to end cosmetics animal testing was tabled, and I backed it all the way. Yet despite the success of the ban, most countries around the world would still allow cruel cosmetics testing to take place. That’s why I’m supporting Cruelty Free International – it’s time to make the EU ban global and end this cruel practice everywhere and forever.”
Cruelty Free International Chief Executive, Michelle Thew, said: “We are delighted that David joins us in calling for a global ban to end cruel and unnecessary cosmetics testing on animals everywhere and forever. We’re asking the UN to take decisive action and adopt an international convention that puts in place one set of harmonised rules. Together we can finally put a stop to outdated animal testing for cosmetics.”
