Bike recycling charity The Bike Station are launching a crowdfunding campaign following the recent fire at their Causewayside base. The charity hopes to raise £10,000 through the campaign, which launches at midday today.
The fire – the cause of which remains unexplained but may be related to a break-in and robbery – completely destroyed the interior of the premises at 250 Causewayside, devastating the Bike Station’s shop floor, workshop and office space, leaving the charity without its home.
In an effort to stay afloat the team is now operating from their warehouse. The mechanics worked tirelesly to reopen the Bike Station secondhand bike shop, which opened for business in the warehouse just two weeks after the fire, maintaining the bike recycling side of the charity. However this is a large space which isn’t heated and has no office area.
Much of the community based work The Bike Station has endeavored to sustain over the last 15 years – including work within the North Edinburgh community – has had to be put on hold, in particular their community outreach work and educational programmes.
“Without access to a functional workshop space and appropriate tools, we haven’t been able to hold our Fix Your Own Bike sessions, which are a great educational resource for the local cycling community,” said manager Steve Hynd.
“With the cold weather setting in, and people less likely to get on their bikes, the fire couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time. We would like to ask for help from members of the public. This could take the form of sharing our cause on social media, with your family and friends or anyone you may think might be interested in helping. Any cash donations through our crowdfunder appeal would be of great help. However small, even a few pounds will go a long way to helping us get back on our feet”.
Today the Bike Station launches a crowdfunding campaign which will take place over the next two weeks to raise the funds needed to enable them to survive. The target of £10,000 will enable the charity to continue services in the local community, promoting cycling and recycling bikes and reducing barriers to cycling.
In the spirit of Christmas they are offering incentives back to those that donate, with rewards such as bike maintenance classes and bike services in return for donations, you can not only help the charity keep going but also give a Christmas gift to your loved one.
