Prizes for Drumbrae Leisure Centre’s Active Art winners

Edinburgh children who took part in a ActiveArt competition to celebrate the relaunch of Edinburgh Leisure’s Drumbrae Leisure Centre, have received their prizes from Olympian swimmer and silver medallist, Robbie Renwick and Drumbrae’s Manageress, Emily Neil.

Local children were asked to create a bright and colourful A4 picture showing their favourite way to be active using any media that they liked including collage, painting, drawing, printmaking and photography.

There were three age groups: under 8 years; 8-12 years; and 13 – 19 years. The winner in each age group received a Clip ‘n Climb voucher for six people, with the runners up in each section winning a £20 art voucher and a goody bag.

The winners’ and runners ups’ pictures are also being displayed on the TV screens at the refurbished Leisure Centre.

Emily Neil, Drumbrae Leisure Centre’s Manager said: “With Drumbrae Leisure Centre very much at the heart of the community, we wanted to engage children from the local area in celebrating our £1m refurbishment.

“Being part of the biggest club in town, we wanted to see what inspired the children to get active. From gym, swim and fitness classes, children’s coaching and health and wellbeing programmes for the local community, no matter what age or stage you are, there is something for everyone.

“And having Olympic silver medallist, Robbie Renwick, present them with their own prizes has been the icing on the cake. They couldn’t believe their luck in meeting a real life Olympian and getting to wear his medal.”

Drumbrae Leisure Centre closed in June for an extensive revamp and re-opened on Monday following the £1m refurbishment. The key improvements at Drumbrae Leisure Centre include:

  • More fitness classes in an environment that will be one of the best in the city, with the creation of a brand new low intensity Mind and Body fitness studio and athe refurbishment of the existing studio;
  • A brand new cycle studio with Matrix bikes offering 18 cycle classes a week including Les Mills Sprint, RPM and group cycling;
  • A new sauna in the pool area
  • Improvements to all the changing areas, toilets and showers
  • A makeover in the reception area, with a new social enterprise café, Café 4 Good

The gym at Drumbrae was recently refurbished with the latest equipment, which included over 60 pieces in October 2015 but a further extension and investment of £30,000 has been spent on new equipment. This includes: two new Matrix IC7 indoor cycles; a Technogym Skill Mill, a self-powered treadmill; creating a dedicated functional training space for small groups as well as a floor matted area for freestyle exercises; a new weights rack; increasing the number of dumb-bells; and a free standing platform for deadlifts for Olympic lifting.  The experienced gym team will be launching new gym classes, as well as being on hand to help customers achieve their personal goals.

The technology of the building has been invested in to improve its efficiency and green credentials which includes solar panels and a pool that uses salt to generate chlorine, rather than the standard pool treatment chemicals; and the customer experience, with the introduction of ‘easy access’ which will reduce queues at the reception.

A new café has also opened at Drumbrae.  Café 4 Good is a social enterprise café run in conjunction with Beer for Good, set up to make a difference to unemployed people who are looking for their opportunity to progress and take that next step.

The new café manager, Gareth Tucker 25, is undertaking his first sole management role after a history of hospitality and working in kitchens. Café for Good will provide first class training and mentor staff while giving them a platform to reach their full potential. With a commitment to social responsibility, the café will operate ethically in everything it does including reducing waste and using other social enterprise and fairtrade suppliers where possible. Their focus is on customer-focussed delivery, professionalism, equality and diversity.
