STV’s fantastic line-up of programmes to highlight the work carried out by the STV Children’s Appeal and local fundraisers across the country to raise money and awareness about children and young people living in poverty in Scotland continues tonight with Who Cares? at 8pm.
Programmes commenced last weekend and will culminating in the annual live show hosted by Lorraine Kelly on Friday 23 September. Viewers will gain insight into some of the many charities and community projects across Scotland that are supported by the STV Children’s Appeal and see how the money raised makes a real difference in the lives of Scotland’s children.
With highlights from Lorraine Kelly’s Kiltwalk, Sean Batty’s gruelling task of running, cycling and walking 169 miles for the Appeal, STV presenters John MacKay and Raman Bhardwaj’s rowing race on the Clyde, and the Pedal for Scotland cycling event, as well as a hard hitting documentary about the care system in Scotland, the programmes will celebrate the fundraising efforts of communities and celebrities across Scotland, and raise awareness of why their hard work matters so much.
Lorraine Kelly, trustee of the STV Children’s Appeal said: “It’s been another fantastic year for the Appeal and once again we’ve seen an incredible level of support from communities up and down the country, with people, groups and local businesses getting behind the campaign by organising their own fundraising events and showing huge generosity.
“I’ve done my bit by taking part in the Kiltwalk event in Edinburgh. It’s a brilliant opportunity to support such a great cause.
“I’m also looking forward to once again hosting the Appeal live show this year and finding out how much Scotland has raised for children in poverty. Viewers can donate all day on Friday 23 September, so please help us make a real difference in the lives of Scotland’s children.”

They Need Our Help
Friday 16 September at 20.00 on STV
In the launch of this year’s STV Children’s Appeal campaign, presented by Andrea Brymer, viewers will meet some of the children and families who are supported by the Appeal.
One of the charities who have benefited from Appeal funding is Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS). In this programme, viewers will meet the Harnwell family from Fife as they visit Rachel House Children’s Hospice, run by CHAS. Eight year old Olivia has a life-shortening condition which includes cerebral palsy and requires round the clock care. Mum Michelle, dad Tom, Olivia and her brother Ben started visiting the children’s hospice five years ago when Ben, now 10 years old, was diagnosed with leukaemia, to give mum and dad a break from caring. Ben has now been given the all clear and the family regularly visit the hospice where they receive special care and support.
Viewers also found out more about charities Action for Children, who supports young carers, The Citadel Youth Centre who runs a group for young mums, and the Notre Dame Centre in Glasgow, who provides support to vulnerable children and families.
Last but not least, Andrea took a look at some of the fantastic fundraising activities taking place across the country this year, and how the money raised with help make a difference in the lives of Scotland’s children.
Who Cares

There are over 15,000 looked after children in Scotland. Around 2.5 billion pounds is spent on the care system every year, with children being looked after at home, in foster care, kinship care, residential care or secure accommodation. More than 80% of children are taken in to care because of abuse or neglect. The care system is meant to be a place of safety and refuge, yet the outcomes for many of the young people who go through the system are horrendous.
Documentary Who Cares features stories of life as a looked after child in Scotland. Five care experienced people talk of their journey through the care system and its aftermath in the hope of touching hearts, opening minds and instigating change.
Who Cares lifts the lid on a system that care experienced people and children’s campaigners say is in desperate need of root and branch reform.
Lorraine and Friends
Thursday 22 September at 19.30 on STV
This half hour programme celebrates the many fundraising heroes from across Scotland who have supported the Appeal this year.
From Lorraine Kelly’s Kiltwalk in Edinburgh and Sean Batty’s gruelling task of running, cycling and walking 169 miles, to STV presenters John MacKay and Raman Bhardwaj’s edge-of-your-seat rowing race on the Clyde and the thousands of riders taking part in the Pedal for Scotland cycling event, the programme catches up with fundraisers across the country, all doing their bit to support the STV Children’s Appeal.
Lorraine’s Big Appeal

The STV Children’s Appeal Live show returns with host Lorraine Kelly celebrating another fantastic year of fundraising. Broadcast live from Glasgow, Lorraine is joined by Sean Batty with links to David Farrell and Jennifer Reoch in Edinburgh, Andrea Brymer in Aberdeen and Louise Cowie in Dundee.
Ewen Cameron and Hayley Matthews will be joined by other well known faces in the phone room to take donations from viewers before Lorraine announces the total sum raised.
On Friday 23 September the branding on STV, as well as city channels STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh, will change to mark the culmination of this year’s STV Children’s Appeal campaign. For a full day, all break bumpers, promos, case studies and idents across the three channels and online will promote the Appeal, fronted by Lorraine Kelly, Sean Batty, Jennifer Reoch and Andrea Brymer. Donation details will be on screen all day to let viewers of STV favourites’ such as This Morning, Emmerdale and Coronation Streetknow how they can help support Scotland’s children.
