Police are searching for a group of youths following a serious collision in Groathill Road North this morning. An out of control Mercedes ploughed through a fence and into a stationery caravan in a garden in the busy street just after 8am and witnesses report seeing young people fleeing the scene. Police have enlisted the support of the aerial support to search for the culprits.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police in Edinburgh responded to a report of a car driving erratically on Groathill Road north around 8.10 am.
“The vehicle was subsequently involved in a collision with a stationary caravan on Groathill Road North. Inquiries are ongoing to trace the individuals believed to have been inside the vehicle. “The search activity is being supported by colleagues in the Air Support Unit.”
A local resident, who asked not to be named, said: “Joyriding seems to be the big thing again – motor bikes on the railway until all hours of night and now this. This happened just a wee while before all the local kids and their parents head out to Ferryhill School, many older children are making their way to Broughton and it’s a busy time for minibuses dropping off at Rowanfield School as well.
“Thank God no-one appears to have been injured and this could have been a lot worse, but you’ve got to question the mentality of the young people who do this sort of thing. It’s only a few short months since a young lad was killed in a motorbike accident in Silverknowes, Do these kids learn nothing?”
