EVOC’s June Dickson supported the local voluntary sector’s participation in community planning through the Neighbourhood Partnerships. She recently moved on to an exciting new role and explains what it’s all about:
I wanted to get in touch to introduce you to my new role as a Director of http://www.mhscot-consultancy.co.uk/, Scotland’s first Social Enterprise tackling stress prevention and early mental health intervention in the workplace.
Having worked within the Third Sector for many years I’m acutely aware that organisations within this sector have the added responsibility of the wellbeing of Volunteers as well as employees at the forefront of their policies, with that in mind I’d appreciate the opportunity to discuss further how we can help and support organisations.
MHScot came about because so many people who we have crossed paths with have experienced various levels of unsatisfactory emotional support, guidance and help while in employment. This has led to all sorts of problems not only in their work environment, but personal lives too. The impact of poor emotional well-being cannot be underestimated. So our new venture includes helping workplaces achieve a happy and productive workforce by implementing a culture of care, increasing skills and achieving the outlook required to deal with the pressures and stresses of the modern workplace.
We are doing this with 2 key approaches in mind
► Stress Prevention
► Early Mental Health Intervention
MHScot’s learning programme is being developed using a ‘pick and mix’ approach. We’re calling this ‘MHScot Your Way’ where YOU pick what is most relevant to your business. Most of what we delivery is entirely bespoke and flexible.
Emotional well-being issues cost the UK around GBP 70 billion every year, or roughly 4.5% of GDP, in lost productivity at work, benefit payments and health care expenditure. The Office for National Statistics data shows that sickness absence caused by stress, anxiety or depression had increased to 15.2 million days lost in 2013 up from 11.8 million days in 2010. We want to influence change at a much earlier phase so that workplaces don’t experience the effects of this at this level.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need further information and please do get in touch if you feel a meeting would be beneficial.
I have attached our general leaflet and also our Scottish Mental Health First Aid leaflet for information.
I’d appreciate if you could circulate throughout your networks.
Many thanks and Best wishes
June Dickson
