Port of Leith Housing Association has been recognised by the Living Wage Foundation as an Accredited Living Wage Employer.
The Association committed to setting its basic starting salary level at the national Living Wage standard two years ago, which now sees all its employees over the age of 25 earn a minimum of £8.25 per hour. The living wage level is calculated by the Centre for Research in Social Policy according to the basic cost of living in the UK, with the hourly rate updated annually.
An independent study revealed that more than 80% of employers believe that the Living Wage had enhanced the quality of the work of their staff, while absenteeism had fallen by approximately 25%. This benefits both the organisation and individuals alike.
Margaret O’Connor, Chair of Port of Leith Housing Association, said: “We are committed to each and every one of our employees, which is why we decided to sign up to become a Living Wage Employer. Since we implemented the scheme two years ago we have noticed that we have maintained a very positive working environment.
“For other companies thinking about adopting the scheme, I would urge them to go for it as it benefits both the organisation and the employees.”
