Holiday health advice from NHS24

As children across Scotland start their summer holidays, NHS 24 is offering help to parents, grandparents and carers to keep the wee ones safe and healthy, whether at home or abroad.

There are a number of potential health issues people should be prepared for, from simple allergies like hay fever, to bumps and bruises. All the information to help people enjoy the best of the weather has been brought together in a  dedicated ‘Safe Summer in Scotland’ section on the NHS inform website www.nhsinform.co.uk.

NHS 24’s Associate Medical Director Dr Laura Ryan said: “Nobody wants ill health to spoil their summer and the majority of the most common problems are easily preventable.

“Accidents do happen of course, so as well as preventing illness, it is best to be prepared with a good first aid kit. Your local pharmacist can advice what your first aid kit should include. Remember to take it if you’re travelling and if you’re lucky enough to be heading abroad be sure to have all relevant paperwork e.g. travel insurance, before you travel. If you fall ill abroad you’ll need to contact the local health services . The Fit for Travel website is a good resource if you’re travelling overseas (www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk).

“If you take regular medication or have repeat prescriptions make sure you order what you need  and pick up in plenty of time before leaving for your holiday. This will help avoid any last minute panics and remember, you can pick up a prescription for a relative if they are unable to make it themselves.

“I would encourage everyone to have a look at the summer health section on NHS informhttp://www.nhsinform.co.uk/health-in-focus/campaigns/ready-for-summer/ – it brings all the information together in one place.

“But if you, or someone you care for, does fall ill you should know who to turn to. The website knowwhototurnto.org  can help with this and of course NHS 24’s out of hours service is there for you on free phone 111 if you need help quickly.

“Hopefully you won’t need us and you’ll enjoy a safe, healthy and happy holiday with lots of sunshine.”
