Disabled children and young people at The Yard in Edinburgh were delighted when their new playground see-saw opened last weekend in time for Easter, thanks to funds raised by Blackhall St Columba’s Church’s WATCH Committee.

The Yard was chosen as Blackhall St Columba’s charity of the year in 2015 and members of the WATCH Committee, the congregation, local businesses and the Blackhall community have been working hard fundraising for The Yard.

Since the latter half of 2015, they have and raised a phenomenal £11,100 through a summer coin collection, a Craft Coffee Morning, a quiz and their annual Christmas Fair. The money is for new play equipment for The Yard’s outdoor adventure playground in Canonmills and to support The Yard’s youth clubs.

George Millar from Blackhall St Columba’s Church said: “Every year the WATCH Committee propose a local charity to benefit from our fundraising.

“We saw that The Yard was a popular choice by the enthusiastic support from the Congregation and the Blackhall community during our program of events. It was good to see that the see-saw had been installed so quickly after we handed over the funds and we enjoyed being part of the exciting opening ceremony.”

Jenny MacDonald, Head of Fundraising at The Yard said: “Blackhall St Columba’s Church has been amazing at raising funds for The Yard this year and we can’t thank them enough. Our service operates on limited funds and most of what we raise is earmarked for essential running of our services, so it is a real treat to be able to spend money on new play equipment particularly a new see-saw for our families.”

Aidan (aged 9) from The Yard said:I love this new see-saw, it’s the best!
