Craigroyston Community Centre: Alive and Kicking!

cccHow many of you thought we lost our community centre when the old school and community centre was demolished around 5 years ago? Well, we did not – but recent events made us realise you thought you had (writes Vanessa Cousins)!

When the new school was built they incorporated a community wing, which is located next to the school reception. There are three fully functional rooms suitable for meetings and recreational activities and a separate kitchen area. The rooms also support the Adult Education day and evening classes.

Recently, the centre was host to the North Edinburgh Community Conference which was a very successful event that brought people together to discuss ideas and solutions for the local area. The event was very meaningful to us because we nearly lost the centre last year, but a group of adult students got together to form a committee and fought back and saved the centre.

The community centre was able to provide ‘in-house’ professional catering services, a lecture room with the capacity to hold 150 people and state of the art projector and screen.

David Pickering, CAN community development worker, said: “Our local community high school seemed like the obvious venue for a community conference, and it proved to be a very popular choice. Feedback on the conference itself was very positive and participants were particularly complimentary about our choice of venue. Many delegates were unaware of the excellent facilities here at Craigroyston and a number said that we should be making much better use of the many great facilities and assets we have in our community.”

Not only do we have excellent conference and meeting facilities and provide space for adult education, we are also looking to put on Knit & Natter classes, Mindful colouring and a Film Club. So any knitters out there please get in contact!

In fact, if anyone has a great idea for a class, course or club then come along and pop in for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee or contact us by phoning 0131 477 7801 (press 2 for community) or email craigcomcentre@gmail.com.
