A group of Edinburgh College Childcare Practice students and their puppet pals have raised £1,267 for local children’s charity The Yard, the local adventure playground that provides a safe space to play for children and young people with disabilities.
Six teams of students organised a series of events to raise funds for the charity and learn about enterprise. The students organised events across the college’s four campuses including a bake sale, Zumba classes, face-painting sessions and a bring-and-buy day.
They also convinced their lecturer Alan Laing to allow them to shave his beard off, raising over £50 in the process. And the Muppets-style puppets they use for classroom activities also helped out in their fundraising ventures.
The students got the chance to learn a range of new skills linked to the care sector, developing their confidence, teamwork and task-management abilities.
The Yard’s Fundraising Manager Anna Robinson said: “What an amazing effort. I was really touched by the positive comments on the student’s Facebook group and delighted that they showed so much enthusiasm for the challenge. The money they’ve raised will help around 80 families with disabilities to use our services – I can’t thank everyone enough for their amazing contribution.”
Edinburgh College Principal Annette Bruton added: “The work of these students is simply outstanding. It’s quite remarkable how much money has been raised for such an excellent cause. What really impressed me was the way in which the students gave 100% commitment to the task and came up with so many imaginative ways to raise the funds.
“Coming to college is about getting skills, knowledge and qualifications – but equally it’s about contributing to society and our students have shown in this project just how far they have come in that.”
Student Louise Lovie said: “By taking part in this enterprise unit we have come to realise the importance of working in a team and using the skills of others. We’ve made real bonds from day one and reflected a lot on our attitudes – I think this will have a really positive impact on our future studies and work.”
