Local MP sends letter of support to ‘essential community facility’
The impending closure of Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre will top the agenda at this month’s Drylaw Telford Communty Council meeting on Wednesday 27 January.
The Centre, which has been at the heart of community activities in the area for twenty years, is likely to close in March unless there is a council u-turn on funding.
Local Edinburgh West MP Michelle Thomson has written a letter of support. She said: “I am very concerned about the potential closure of Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre. I have held surgeries at the centre a number of times and it is clear from my visits that it is a well-used facility, providing a wide range of important services to people in the Drylaw area.
“The centre has something for everyone – from the Happy Little Feet group for children under four to the three different weekly clubs for pensioners. Community centres are a vital resource and any closure will have a profound impact on the centre’s users and potentially lead to members of our local community feeling more isolated.
“I am writing to Edinburgh City Council to outline my concerns, and have signed the petition calling on the Council to revise their decision to cut funding to the centre. I will be doing what I can to work with the centre to explore ways to prevent the closure of this essential community facility.”
The community council meeting will be held at Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday 27 January at 7pm – all welcome.
